Two National Guardsmen are in critical condition after they were shot near the White House in Washington, D.C., officials said. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the Guard members were attacked in a targeted shooting. A suspect was taken into custody, D.C. police said. West Virginia Gov. initially said the two National Guardsmen had died, but later walked back his statement.

Editor's note: West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said there were "conflicting reports" about the conditions of the two National Guard members, after earlier saying the two had been killed.
