U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says that U.S. officials are in direct contact with the Syrian rebel group that overthrew President Bashar Assad's regime a week ago.

At a news conference held in Aqaba, Jordan, Blinken confirmed that the Biden administration has been communicating with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, which the U.S. and other nations have designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

While Blinken would not address the specifics of the conversations had with HTS, he did say that the U.S. is discussing how the group plans to govern in Syria during this transition period.

The announcement comes as top diplomats from the United States, the Arab League and Turkey met in Jordan to discuss the situation in Syria after its government collapsed.

LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow spoke with Hussain Abdul-Hussain, research fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, to break down what this means as the region continues to deal with several conflicts.
