Sweeping U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods are taking effect today after the midnight deadline passed with no new trade deal. CTV's Jeremie Charron reports that Prime Minister Mark Carney is promising dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting in September following the breakdown of talks. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says there are no new talks planned and the United States will respond to any Canadian retaliation. Provincial leaders including Alberta Premier Danielle Smith say they are waiting to see what support the federal government will offer affected businesses.
