China has accused the United States of trying to thwart its improved ties with India. Beijing has claimed that Washington is distorting its defence policy to achieve that goal. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in a press briefing that his country views relations with India as strategic and long-term. China also asked Washington not to "pass judgment" on its border issue with India. "The Pentagon's report distorts China's defence policy, sows discord between China and other countries, and aims at finding a pretext for the U.S. to maintain its military supremacy," Lin Jian said. A report by the Pentagon dated December 23 mentioned that "China probably seeks to capitalise on decreased tension along the LAC to stabilise bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of U.S.-India ties; however, India probably remains sceptical of China's actions and motives".
