In this video, I’ll show you how to shoot a dramatic fashion editorial on location, even when the light is flat and overcast.
I found a spot just outside my studio that had the setting I wanted, but the natural light wasn’t giving me the contrast or atmosphere I had in mind. Using the Profoto B30 Duo Kit, I was able to build the look with two strobes: one to give my subject that bold, direct flash feel, and another to add separation and the suggestion of warm evening sunlight. I’ll show you how the setup came together and how I used it to create a series of fashion images.

In this video we will cover:
- Why I reach for the 500W B30 over the B20 for location shoots
- Positioning a bare strobe low and flat for the flash on camera look
- Using the Power Beam for a 3.5 stop output increase and controlled 20 degree spread
- Adding a CTO gel for evening sunlight color and flexibility between color and black and white
- Setting ambient exposure first to build a moody, dramatic base
- How fast recycle times support quick shooting, hair movement, and fabric in motion
💡Lighting
1. Main light: bare Profoto B30 strobe positioned low and flat to the subject for a flash on camera look
2. Rim light: Profoto B30 with Power Beam modifier and CTO gel for hard, defined separation and evening sunlight color
3. Ambient exposure set darker first using exposure simulation to create a moody foundation
