India’s Indigenous Submarine AIP: DRDO’s Technology to Boost Underwater Endurance | Defence Dynamics
India is advancing its indigenous Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology for conventional submarines. On 24 October 2026, the Ministry of Defence announced the commencement of Setting to Work Phase-2 activity for the DRDO-developed AIP system’s Energy Module at Larsen & Toubro’s Hazira facility in Gujarat.
How does AIP work? How can fuel-cell technology help submarines remain underwater for longer, reduce dependence on snorkelling and improve operational flexibility?
On Defence Dynamics, we explain the science behind fuel-cell-based AIP, its importance for submarine stealth and endurance, and what indigenous development could mean for the Indian Navy’s operations in the strategically important Indian Ocean.
