Is Walmart Fashion Actually Good Now? I Tried 8 Pieces

I went inside the Walmart Studio in Los Angeles with one hour, racks of clothes, and one catch: I couldn’t try on a single thing.
Everything was a sample size, so I had to shop the same way so many of us shop online — by looking closely at the fabric, construction, shape, and the details that tell you whether a piece is actually well designed.
I chose eight pieces from Walmart’s Scoop and Free Assembly collections by Brandon Maxwell, ordered them when I got home, and now we’re finding out whether the hanger told the truth.
I call it the HANGER TEST:
FABRIC · CONSTRUCTION · SHAPE · POINT OF VIEW
Those are the four things I look at when I can’t step into a dressing room — and they can tell you a surprising amount before you ever click “add to cart.”
We’re also turning a few of these pieces inside out because affordable fashion deserves the same scrutiny as anything else in your closet. One jacket is fully lined. Another isn’t. One dress has a finishing detail I genuinely didn’t expect to find at Walmart.
Because the question isn’t simply, “Is it inexpensive?”
The better question is: “Is it well designed?”
And when you know what to look for, affordable fashion can still be thoughtful, flattering, and worthy of a place in your wardrobe.
