While British and German audiences knew him as the Desert Fox, ordinary Italian soldiers serving alongside Rommel in North Africa reportedly used a very different, far more reverent nickname among themselves, calling him Santo Rommel, meaning Saint Rommel. Veterans later explained that the nickname reflected how much Rommel appeared to genuinely care about the welfare of ordinary soldiers under his command, more so, in their eyes, than most other commanders they had served under during the desert campaign. The affectionate title, largely unknown outside of firsthand veteran accounts, offers a striking contrast to the more calculating, tactical image most popular history remembers him by today.rommel santo rommel nickname, italian soldiers rommel true story, rommel affectionate name facts, rommel soldier care history, military history shorts, ww2 generals shorts, rommel untold story, rommel italian troops respect, ww2 rommel veteran accounts, rommel reputation among men
