After nearly eleven months of negotiations and six rounds of talks, India and the United States have finally reached a trade deal, ending months of tariff threats and economic uncertainty. The headline outcome is significant: U.S. tariffs on Indian exports have been slashed from 50 per cent to 18 per cent, offering major relief to Indian exporters of electronics, textiles, gems and pharmaceuticals. Markets responded sharply, with the Sensex and Nifty posting strong gains. However, beyond this tariff cut, the fine print remains unclear. While President Trump claims India has agreed to stop importing Russian oil, move towards zero tariffs on U.S. goods, and purchase American products worth 500 billion dollars, the Indian government has so far confirmed only the tariff reduction. With no official joint statement yet, questions remain over potential concessions in sensitive sectors like agriculture, dairy and energy — making it difficult to judge whether this deal is truly balanced or tilted in favor of Washington.
