Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov has returned to in-person G20 finance talks for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Siluanov met US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as Washington defended engagement with Moscow.

The move triggered strong objections from European officials. Poland’s Andrzej Domanski said, “We do not trust Russia. They lie constantly,” while German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil called the return a “signal I find troubling” and warned of “an attempt at normalisation.”

The meeting highlights tensions between Washington’s effort to engage Moscow over the Ukraine war and Europe’s opposition to normalising relations with Russia. European officials excluded Siluanov from the G20 family photo as diplomatic divisions over Russia’s participation remain.
