The cast of Dominik Graf’s ‘Beloved Sisters’ graced the red carpet for the movie’s premiere at the Berlin film festival.Screened in the main competition, the film is a historical drama about a love triangle involving German poet Friedrich Schiller and two beautiful sisters from the penniless aristocracy.
The film’s director explains what moved him to make the movie:
“From the first time I read the script, I was touched by this incredible affection, this love, warmth and intimacy between the three characters. They wanted nothing but the best for each other, there was no rivalry at first sight, no jealousy, no intrigues, seemingly, in this clan of three. That moved me in a special way,” said Dominik Graf.
The film is punctuated by the characters reading out the letters
between Schiller and the eldest sister, Caroline von Beulwitz, who went on to become an author in her own right.
‘Beloved Sisters‘ is vying for the the festival’s top prize, which will
be awarded next week.
Also competing for the Golden Bear is ‘Stratos’ by Greek director Yannis Economides, a social drama about a hitman who wants to mend his ways.
Stratos works in a bakery at night and is trying to save money to pay for the escape of Leonidas, the man he owes his life to and who is in prison.
It is Yannis Economides’ fourth feature film:
“We follow this man’s course. We watch the whole story of this damaged, puzzling and broken character, of this hitman, from the very first moment that he falls apart, till the time he tries to build a new life. Many incidents and twists drive him to the present situation. At the end of this course, our character is atoned. We see him trying to change his destiny,” said the director.
The forlornness of his main character reflects the desperation of a society that has given up on itself and its values. The film is not just aimed at showing Greece as a country in crisis, but the Western world in general.
It is Greek actor Vangelis Mourikis’ third film with the director:
“What I like very much, in Yannis Economides’ cinema, is his quest for truth and the way he tries to portray it in his characters. This is something that he also expects from the actors he works with, in the way they approach their role. I am also fascinated by the energy that all these characters express on screen. It is something very lively and vibrant. It is very liberating not only for the viewer, but also for the actor,” said Vangelis Mourikis.
Premiered in Berlin, ‘Stratos’ is out now in Greece.
