Thanks to Shimano for the products used in this video. All views expressed in this video are the presenters own views.
Simon Richardson talks you through the changes and development we've witnessed since the first Di2 groupset was revealed to us back in 2009.
In 2009 we were presented with the Shimano Dura Ace 7970 Di2 10speed groupset which featured a (now chunky looking) 4/5 conductor wire electronic system, this thicker cable only lasted for this model of groupset. This really was the first electronic groupset that importantly worked in all weathers
2013 saw the release of the 9070 Dura Ace Di2 11speed groupset. This was introduced with thinner connection cables along with the convenience of E-TUBE software. This allows personalisation of shift buttons and shifting patterns/speed. This software also gives the user the opportunity to update the firmware on components and is used with the other Di2 groupsets in the Shimano product range .
2017 see's the introduction of two varieties of the latest and greatest Shimano Dura Ace Di2 groupset.
The R9150 groupset is the rim brake version and R9170 groupset features the same components but features hydraulic disc brakes instead of the traditional callipers.
We explored the R9170 groupset in this video: http://gcn.eu/duraace9170
Another new feature to the road groupset is Synchro Shift, it creates an intuitive experience on the bike through synchronized front and rear shifting that can be custom programmed.
In addition to traditional “Full” Synchro Shift, riders can optionally select “Semi” Synchro Shift. This intuitive new mode automatically reacts when the rider shifts from one chainring to another, automatically shifting the rear derailleur to minimize the gear step, thus preserving the rider’s rhythm. This can also used with previous 11speed Di2 groupsets through firmware updates and the E-Tube software for customisation.
Further integration of components such as junction boxes and Shimano's first powermeter see the Japanese brand continue to push the boundaries of innovation and technology in the bike industry.
