Happy Birthday to Cherilyn Sarkasian, better known as Cher, who turned 75 last week! Born in California to her mother who was a model and part-time actress. After her parents divorced when she was just ten months old Cher's mom started working as a waitress and actress while also securing her daughter some roles as extras on tv shows. In 5th grade Cher produced a performance of the musical 'Oklahoma!' for her teacher and class. Cher enrolled at a private school where she performed songs for students during lunch hours. At the age of 16 she left school and moved to Los Angeles with a friend. She met Sonny Bono in November of '62 and became his housekeeper. Eventually they became good friends, then lovers and married in 1964.

They first started as Caesar & Cleo while Cher recorded and released her debut album 'All I Really Want To Do' in 1965, which peaked at #16 in the US Billboard album charts. In early '65 the duo started calling themselves 'Sonny & Cher'. Their single 'I Got You Babe' became a smash hit and topped the US Billboard Single Charts and also knocked the Beatles of the UK Single Charts. Their debut album 'Look At Us' peaked at #2 for 8 weeks in the USA. Multiple singles reached the Top 10 i the USA and by 1967 they had sold over 40 million records worldwide. Cher also released her 2nd studio album 'The Sonny Side Of Chér' in 1966.

By the beginning of 1970 the group lost their appeal especially to the younger generation, although they had some success as hosts of a comedy-show named 'The Sonny & Cher comedy hour'. In 1971 Cher released a solo single called 'Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves' which topped both the US and the Canadian single charts. The album with the same name peaked at #16. In 1973 her single 'Half Breed' became another charttopper as did 'Dark Lady' in 1974, making Cher the first female to score 4 #1 singles in the USA. In 1975 the pair of Sonny and Cher divorced after maritial problems had long been going on.

After a few unsuccessful albums she released 'Take Me Home' in 1979 with a then popular disco sound and reached #25 in the USA. She then formed a band named 'Black Rose' under producer Giorgio Moroder but after an unsuccessful album the group disbanded in 1981. Meanwhile Cher had developped and furthered her acting career which she continued into the 80s with huge success including an Academy Award for 'Moonstruck' in 1988. Before in 1987 she revived her musical career and released her first album in 5 year named 'Cher'. It peaked at 32 in the USA. More successful were her following singles and album 'Heart Of Stone' which was released in 1989 and peaked at #10 in the USA, #7 in the UK and topped the Australian album charts. It has been ceritified 4x platinum in Australia and Canada and triple platinum in the USA. The single 'If I Could Turn Back Time' peaked at #3 in the USA, #6 in the UK and topped the Australian single charts. In 1990 Cher starred in the movie 'Mermaids' which became a box office hit and so did the soundtrack song 'Shoop Shoop Song' which topped the UK Single Charts for 5 weeks.

In 1991 Cher released her next album 'Love Hurts' which barely reached the Top 50 in the USA, but topped the UK album charts. In 1998 her longtime partner Sonny Bono died during a skiing accident. Later that year Cher released her next album 'Believe' with dance-pop songs and became a mega seller, topping the charts in Canada and Germany among other places and peaking at #7 in the UK and #4 in the USA. It has been certified 4x platinum in the USA, 2x platinum in Germany and the UK and 6x platinum in Canada. The single with the same name topped many charts across the world such as USA, UK, Germany, Australia, Canada just to name a few.

Later in her career Cher released 3 more studio albums, she has became an icon in many ways and received many many awards over her illustrious career.
