"El Mencho" has been killed in Mexico causing far-reaching impacts for American tourists. The death of the major cartel leader has plunged many of the country's most popular seaside towns into a state of heightened alert, anticipating a period of violence due to the resulting destabilization. "El Mencho," whose real name is Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the most powerful cartels in Mexico. LiveNOW’s Shawna Khalafi is speaking with Will Carless, who covers extremism and emerging issues for USA Today, who has more information on the aftermath of the cartel leader’s death.

According to early reports, "El Mencho" was killed during a shoot-out in his home state of Jalisco as the Mexican military attempted to capture him. Cartel members responded with violence across the country, blocking roads and setting fire to vehicles.
