Dozens killed, 100 injured in fire at Swiss ski resort bar, police say

A fire at the “Le Constellation” bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, during a New Year’s Eve party left dozens dead and around 100 injured, many seriously. The blaze, reportedly started by fireworks or birthday candles in the bar’s wooden ceiling, spread quickly, causing panic and chaos.

Emergency teams deployed 10 helicopters and 40 ambulances, and victims were treated in nearby hospitals and triage centers. Authorities set up forensic tents to identify the badly burned victims, many of whom are believed to be from multiple countries.

Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin, along with international leaders, expressed shock and condolences. Local prosecutors said the fire is considered accidental, not an attack. A no-fly zone was imposed over Crans-Montana, which will host next year’s Alpine World Ski Championships.
