On Feb 3, 2026, a U.S. F‑35C fighter jet launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier shot down an Iranian Shahed‑139 drone that was approaching the carrier in the Arabian Sea. The U.S. military described the drone’s intent as “unclear” and “aggressive.”

The intercept was carried out in self‑defense to protect the carrier and its personnel. No U.S. service members or equipment were harmed.

The carrier was operating roughly 500 miles off Iran’s southern coast in international waters at the time.
