“Preposterous”: US admiral responds to claim Trump might look to annex Canada

Asked about Canada-US relations during the 28th annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense conference in Victoria, B.C., on Wednesday, Adm. Samual Paparo said Canada’s decisions on its own military were a “sovereign matter.”

The comments follow a controversial social media post from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mocking Canadian cadets, amid increased political tensions between the two countries.

Paparo called Canada a “close ally” and later dismissed a question about a scenario where the U.S. could launch a military attack on Canada as “preposterous.
