We were kind of short handed with pure tech animators on DOOM, so I handled most of the hard surface rigging. Unfortunately, this also included doors and there were a lot of doors in the game. There were so many doors, I used to joke that we should rename the game to DOOR or DOORs, and use the DOOM style font. Doors are not difficult to animate, but rigging them can take half a day or more for some of the more complex doors. I got the simple ones down to a good system, but the process of getting the model, fixing the alignment since many of the modelers did not center their work and use true symmetry for some reason, setting up joints, skinning, adding controls for complex setups, exporting, testing in-game, animating, adding the animations to the def, and passing to the designer, could end up being an all day task. This video isn’t even all the doors, but it’s most of them. I’m Brett Paton, I worked on Doors.DOORS
