Global Stock Markets Crash LIVE: Asia Bears Brunt of Trump Tariffs | Vantage with Palki Sharma |N18GThe global stock markets opened in red on Monday, April 7, days after US President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs kicked in against US trade partners. Markets across Europe and Asia remained bearish throughout the day, with traders calling it a 'Black Monday'. In India, the Sensex crashed over 2,200 points, and Nifty fell by over three per cent, below the 22,200-mark. It is estimated that Indian investors lost well over Rs 12 lakh crore, or USD 150 billion, in a single day. Similarly, Japan's Nikkei dropped by over 8%, and China's TaiEx by over 10% — forcing by Taiwan and Tokyo to suspend trading and avert further panic selling. Hong Kong's market also suffered its steepest decline since 1997, with the Hang Seng slumping by 13%.
But why did Asia face the brunt of Trump's global tariffs? It's because Asian countries faced the highest tariff rates, with Japan, South Korea and India facing 26% tariffs, and China a whopping 54% tariff. In the US too, Dow Jones opened in red, and slumped by over 1,300 points within minutes of opening.
As fear grips the global trade markets, when will the situation get better? And how will further retaliatory tariffs impact the world economies? On Vantage tonight, Palki Sharma tells you more.
