Today marks the beginning of several updates to building and planning rules.
Ten new national direction policies have come into effect under the Resource Management Act, which guides councils on how to develop local plans and make decisions.

For example, the updated National Policy Statement for Renewable Electricity is intended to make the consenting of renewable generation projects easier. The Government has also made consenting simpler for mining and quarrying in a bid to grow the economy.

Also taking effect today are changes to the Building Act, with granny flats now able to be built without resource consent. Here's Political Correspondent Zane Small.
