A senior Trump administration official has told US media that, for War Powers Resolution purposes, the United States’ hostilities with Iran—beginning in February—have now been considered “terminated.” The official stated that both sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire on April 7, which has since been extended, and confirmed that there has been no exchange of fire between US Armed Forces and Iran since that date. This interpretation allows the White House to argue that it is not required to seek congressional approval under the 1973 War Powers Resolution, which mandates formal authorization for military actions exceeding 60 days. The position aligns with remarks made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during Senate testimony, where he suggested that the ceasefire effectively paused the conflict. However, tensions remain in the region, as Iran continues to maintain influence over the Strait of Hormuz, while the US Navy reportedly enforces a maritime blockade to restrict Iranian oil tankers from leaving for international waters, highlighting that despite the ceasefire, strategic and geopolitical pressure in the region is still ongoing.
