Janet Jackson is Today's Pop and R&B Blueprint. She's a trailblazer in Pop and R&B, raising the bar for music video choreography, speaking out about social injustice and breaking racial and sexual taboos who's undoubtedly deserving of the title "Queen". In 1986, Janet Jackson released an album that changed the course of her career, and of pop music. Control took over radio, reinvented the playbook for Black artists crossing over into pop and ushered in a whole new sound for R&B. For more than a decade after, Janet Jackson released hit after hit and No. 1 album after No. 1 album, alongside her production and writing partners Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
In 1989, her fourth album, Rhythm Nation would mark a shift in concern from personal independence to collective liberation. She discussed unconventional topics such as drugs, hunger and homelessness as well as illiteracy and self-help. Her social and political views were translated in a 30-minute black and white visual film including performances of “Miss You Much”, “The Knowledge” and culminating with the military-style choreography of “Rhythm Nation”.
Then in 1993 came her second-self titled album “Janet” and in 1997 "The Velvet Rope".
