Beatrice O'Reilly (Carol Burnett) is a gregarious, hard-drinking Texan living in Hollywood during the mid-40's. Always in a state of denial, she doesn't listen to her family's cries for her to go on the wagon. She eventually realizes the state she is in and dries up and at the same time builds a friendship house for other alcoholic women.
