We’re going back to a time when the bar was raised for video quality in the music industry. At the time most “black” music was banned from most “white” stations. It was also around the time when the music industry badly needed a boost after suffering from a three-year slump. So how was the bar raised when half of the marketing department lost their jobs from Epic/Portrait/CBS Associated Labels? Well, we have to thank Michael Jackson for turning things around. It is said that “Thriller” was the driving force behind what became the hottest span in Epic’s history. Michael Jackson’s 14-minute movie short for “Thriller” has also been called the greatest, most influential music video of all time. In 2006, “Thriller” was listed in the Guinness World Records as the most successful music video, selling over 1 million units. In December 2009, “Thriller”’ was chosen by the Library of Congress to be in the US National Film Registry, being the first ever music video to be selected. This was the pivotal point that springboard the music video industry today, in a way few historians appreciate. The Michael Jackson-MTV combo also brought about significant change by helping to reintegrate a dying popular culture and paving the way for “black” music to become mainstream again. And to this day it has never again been pushed from the spotlight.#musicVideo #ThursdayThrowback #music
