Dwight Muhammad Qawi, “The Camden Buzzsaw,” was more than just a two-time world boxing champion — he was a story of redemption, resilience, and transformation.

Born Dwight Braxton in Camden, New Jersey, Qawi discovered boxing while serving time in Rahway State Prison. After his release, he shocked the world by rising quickly through the ranks, capturing the WBC Light Heavyweight Title in 1981 and later the WBA Cruiserweight Title in 1985.

Qawi’s battles with Matthew Saad Muhammad, Michael Spinks, Evander Holyfield, and George Foreman cemented him as one of boxing’s toughest warriors. His epic 15-round war against Holyfield in 1986 remains one of the greatest cruiserweight fights in history.

Beyond the ring, Qawi converted to Islam in 1982, dedicating his life to faith, family, and mentoring youth. Even after retirement, he continued to inspire by working as a counselor and mentor, leaving behind a legacy far beyond boxing.

After a five-year battle with dementia, Qawi passed away at 72, remembered as a champion inside the ring and a hero outside of it.
