This concert performance by Steve Miller Band was a live televised Rockpalast concert, broadcasted in several European countries. Despite being a West-German WDR production, it was also broadcasted behind the then Iron Curtain, most notably in East-Germany and the Soviet Union.

The band headlined the Second Open Air Loreley festival, held on August 20, 1983, at the Freilichtbühne Loreley, an amphitheater located on top of the Loreley rock in St. Goarshausen, near Frankfurt, (West) Germany.

The Steve Miller Band had previously been touring The United States in support of their no. 1 hit "Abracadabra", helping to promote their album of the same name to no. 3 on the US charts. When the US tour ended, the band gave its only concert of that year in Europe at Loreley. It would prove to be the last show of the band for many years to come.

Steve Miller had decided that the only concert in Europe should be a spectacular event, so the show opened with two tigers appearing on the stage together with a magician who had been flown in from the US.

The added complexity of the intro, combined with technical difficulties the band faced with the synthesizer set-up and other stage equipment, make the opening feel awkward and corny. The band then appears fully dressed in tuxedos, which further adds to the confusion of what the band intended to achieve with its public display.

This concert registration starts off with a public announcement and includes the Blues jam session which is often omitted from other registrations.

This one-off show shows the band performing at peak level and continues to be a highlight in Steve Miller’s live repertoire.

Point of interest: one of the acts that performed earlier that afternoon was none other than U2.
