The 6 Most Important Landscape Painters Alive Today, Ranked

7 Views   Added
Meet 6 modern landscape painters you need to know in 2026. In this Contemporary Art Top5ives countdown, we profile six contemporary landscape artists from Sweden, Romania, France, Britain and the United States, and take a close look at how each one builds a painting.

Landscape is one of the oldest subjects in painting, but these artists rarely paint a place exactly as it is. Some invent places that have never existed. Some build their scenes from old photographs, film stills and Photoshop collages. Others mix real landscapes with memory, migration and family history. For each painter, you get a short biography, a clear look at their style and a step-by-step guide to their working process, from wooden panels and spray paint to underpainting and mosaics.

In this countdown:
6. Camilla Engström – the self-taught Swedish painter of soft, glowing imaginary landscapes
5. Serban Savu – the Cluj painter of everyday life in modern Romania, who represented Romania at the 2024 Venice Biennale
4. Jules de Balincourt – the Paris-born, Brooklyn-based painter who builds dreamlike worlds without a single sketch
3. Mamma Andersson – Sweden's painter of quiet, mysterious forests and empty rooms
2. April Gornik – the American painter of light, storms and invented skies
1. Hurvin Anderson – the Turner Prize-nominated British painter of memory, the Caribbean and the barbershop
