So, The MLS draft - how DOES it work? The Major League Soccer SUPERDRAFT is an exciting annual event that matches young, exciting players with MLS clubs. The Superdraft has produced some of football's greatest MLS Stars and each iteration promises to bring through new talent with huge potential.

Teams participate in the draft to choose players who have graduated from college or have otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft is made up of the MLS College Draft, in which players who had completed their undergraduate degrees were picked, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were selected. Each club has a choice in each of the three rounds of the draft, which are ordered based on the clubs' standings in the regular season and playoffs, with the last-placed team (or expansion teams) receiving the first pick.
The draft was intended to help weaker clubs build their squads and its purpose was to ensure strict parity in the league. Since its inception in 2000, the SuperDraft has taken the place of the league's regular draft.

The 2010s saw a decline in the significance of the SuperDraft as MLS teams developed their own youth academy programmes and added young players from other leagues. For the first time, conference calls and online streaming were used to conduct the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.
