Since 1997, the time kids spend home alone has dropped almost 40%, and today's 18-year-olds have hit fewer independence milestones than any generation before them.
A study of 650 parent-child pairs linked heavy parental control to worse coping skills in adulthood. That's not because those parents loved their kids less. They were anxious first, and control was how they calmed themselves down.
We didn't mean to raise kids who can't cope. We just never let go long enough to find out if they could.
