Donald Trump has signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” adding a new flashpoint to already strained US-Canada relations.
The move comes amid a major trade dispute, including new 50% US tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods. Canada has rejected the proposed name change, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying, “this lake is called Lake Ontario – today and forever.”
The US can change the name it uses officially, but Canada and other countries are not required to recognize it. The move could further intensify political and diplomatic tensions between Washington and Ottawa as both sides remain engaged in a wider trade dispute.
