The Trump administration has sent a blunt message to India and China over their continued purchases of Russian oil: “Clean up your act.” US Senator Richard Blumenthal has urged both countries to buy their oil and gas elsewhere as Washington steps up pressure on major buyers of Russian energy. The US House has passed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act by 262–159. The legislation gives President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil and gas, including India and China. India, one of the world’s biggest oil importers, says it remains committed to energy security and will continue sourcing supplies from diverse sellers based on market conditions. New Delhi has also warned that such US measures could affect India-US bilateral ties and global energy markets. But who ultimately pays when Washington reaches for the tariff hammer?
