The technically ground breaking video for Invisible was directed by Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go, One Hour Photo), and made possible by the vision and incredible technical achievement of Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), with 60 seconds of the video shown during a Super Bowl ad break on 2nd February and on YouTube later the same day.MLF designed a real-time visual system that captured and analysed U2’s movements as they performed on a stage, allowing the band to generate visuals interactively on a giant LED screen behind them. The lighting system was programmed to respond and interact with the visuals, band and the LED screens. The audience were given hand held 10m lumens torches that MLF developed to help facilitate audience interaction. Due to the time frame this was a great solution: the project was realised over six days rehearsal and prep, with a three day shoot featuring 1,000 extras in an airport hangar in Santa Monica, L.A. Each movement of the band and audience results in a truly unique and stunning visual concept.
“Cameras track the movement of the band and audience and feed that information into the Punkalator, an application developed specifically for this project by MLF,” explains MLF director Robin McNicholas. “This then interfaces with a Green Hippo Media Server and works in sync with Protools and a GrandMA lighting console.”
