The 2026 US midterm elections are taking shape with President Donald Trump remaining a major factor in the congressional contest. A new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll shows Democratic congressional candidates leading Republicans 53% to 41% among registered voters nationwide.

The poll, conducted September 14–15 among 1,280 registered voters, gives Democrats a 12-point advantage on the generic congressional ballot, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points. Independents are also backing Democratic candidates by 57% to 32%.

Trump's influence is particularly visible in how voters describe their congressional choice. Forty-five percent say their vote is mainly a vote against President Trump, compared with 24% who say it is mainly a vote for him. A majority of independents also describe their congressional vote as being against Trump.
