Why Is Lockheed Martin Transferring C-130J Super Hercules' Technology To India? | Explained

0 views · Added Sep 25, 2026 · via YouTube
US defence and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin has signalled it is ready to share the transfer of technology for key parts of its Super Hercules C-130J transport aircraft if it wins India's contract for 60 medium transport aircraft, valued at approximately Rs 1 lakh crore. Lockheed VP Robert Toth confirmed the offer, adding that winning the contract would also give India access to several advanced technologies in defence and aerospace acquired by the group over the years.

India already operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft with the Indian Air Force, which have clocked over 58,000 flight hours across demanding missions from Ladakh's high-altitude operations to flood relief in Nepal and evacuation missions from conflict zones. Lockheed's proposal involves 12 aircraft in flyaway condition and 48 built in India, with its existing 12 being upgraded to match, taking India's effective fleet to 72 aircraft of identical capability and lifespan.

The offer builds on 15 years of Lockheed-Tata partnership, over 500 Indian suppliers, and more than $700 million in defence exports already generated from Indian industry.
