I recorded this track as a play-along practice piece, purely for critique by my fellow members on http://www.scottsbasslessons.com It is not intended for publication, or wider circulation. It is not for profit.I got a reminder, when a new member at Scott’s Bass Lessons joined from North Carolina, just a few days ago. It jogged my own realisation that I had never recorded my own play along with this iconic song.
I Have long been a fan of James Taylor’s music, which is why I chose to play along with his recording of his own composition, “Carolina In My Mind”, which he originally recorded on his (1968) self-titled debut Album.
The lyrics have such a great significance. JT tells such a fine tale …
Dark and silent late last night,
I think I might have heard the highway calling ...
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
And signs that might be omens say I'm going, I'm going
I'm gone to Carolina in my mind.
He recorded it while overseas, recording for the Beatles label, “Apple Records”. It was originally produced by Peter Asher. Paul McCartney played Bass on the original recording, for which he received significant critical acclaim at the time.
The recording was originally released as a “Single”. It received critical plaudits. It was not an immediate commercial success. It was re-recorded for James Taylor’s (1976) “Greatest Hits” Album, in this version, which is most familiar to listeners. It has been a staple of James Taylor’s many Concert Performances across the decades.
I played a Bass line of my own creation. I enjoyed creating my Bass line across three octaves.
I chose to play along on my very new to me (2019) Ken Smith BSR 5TN “Black Tiger” through neck, 5 string fretted Bass. It is fitted with a new set of Ken Smith’s own brand tapered core round wound Stainless Steel strings, with a diameter of 0.130 on the low B string.
I’m hugely satisfied with this relatively new to me Bass. It has found a good home. I shall cherish and enjoy it for keeps.
I played this song in ‘Active’ mode via its onboard preamp. I set the onboard three-band Treble, Mid and Bass controls at 50%. The Pan between the Neck and Bridge Pickups was also set mid-way between the Neck and Bridge PUs
I routed it via my Bergantino B|AMP, which I used as an inline preamp, I set the tone controls on my Bergantino B|AMP flat.
One practice run through and then I recorded it. This was, a one shot ‘take’. I am pleased with the tone and quality of the sound. That was what I wanted to achieve. The only sound effect is driven by my fingers.
I sent the signal from my Bergantino B|AMP direct through an XLR cable, to my Focusrite Clarett 4 Pre USB Audio Interface, which is connected to my Intel i7 powered, Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64 bit PC. The Audio track was recorded direct on Ableton Live 10 Lite recording software.
The Video was contemporaneously captured, via my Canon EOS M50 mirrorless camera, initially to an internal memory card, from which I subsequently downloaded it to my PC.
From there, it was It was imported direct to Corel Pinnacle Studio Video Software, version 21.5. I turned off the Audio track on the original video, captured via the microphone in my camera. The higher quality Audio track was subsequently added and synchronised with the video footage.
Although this camera can record HD video files up to 4k resolution, the files become far too large and unwieldy for general upload use, so I uploaded the completed composite video as a SD MPEG-4 format file, to save delay when replayed over the Internet.
Enjoy ;o)
