Japan Welcomes US-Iran Ceasefire, Urges Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Japan has welcomed the newly announced ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a positive development at a time of intense regional instability. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said what matters most now is genuine de-escalation and the prevention of any further military escalation in West Asia.

A major concern for Tokyo remains the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. Japan has strongly emphasised the need to ensure safe passage through the waterway, which is vital for global energy supplies and international shipping.

Kihara also underlined Japan’s support for diplomacy, saying Tokyo hopes a final agreement can be reached swiftly through negotiations. His remarks come after US President Donald Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran just before his deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan’s response reflects broader international concern that while the ceasefire offers temporary relief, the real test lies in whether it can hold and evolve into a more durable political settlement.
