Iran Says Two Black Hawks And One C-130 Were Destroyed During U.S. Rescue Mission In Iran

A high-risk U.S. rescue mission inside Iran has triggered fresh controversy after Iranian state-linked media claimed that several American aircraft were destroyed during the operation.

According to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, the U.S. attempted to rescue a stranded airman after a fighter jet was brought down. Iranian officials claimed the mission failed, alleging that a C-130 military transport aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were destroyed during the operation.

However, a U.S. official told Reuters that the rescue itself was successful and that the airman — identified as the weapons systems officer from a downed F-15 — was extracted by special operations forces. The official added that at least one aircraft had to be destroyed by U.S. forces after it malfunctioned during the operation.

The incident raises serious questions about the risks, costs and complexity of U.S. military operations inside hostile Iranian territory, especially as the wider West Asia conflict continues to intensify.

This episode may prove to be one of the most dramatic rescue attempts of the war so far.
