SURFING HURRICANE HILARY BARRELS. Tropical storm Hilary slammed California and brought epic surf to Southern California on August 20, 2023. Newport Beach experienced well overhead sets courtesy of pulsing swell and strong offshore winds from the northeast. Thank you to Ethan McKenzie for documenting this historic swell and the epic thumbnail by Craig Larson.

This storm caused widespread destruction throughout the Southland, bringing heavy rainfall (nearly 12 inches in certain inland regions), resulting in flooding, road closures, mudslides, and flash floods in Baja.
Hurricane swells are rare but when they do hit California they are a spectacle to be held. Spots like the Wedge and Newport Beach jetties seemed to have the best waves during this rare swell.
Our thoughts are with the community in Maui as the devastation caused by the West Maui Wildfires has destroyed Lahaina and beyond. In addition, Kihei and various areas of Upcountry Maui, such as Kula and Olinda, have faced and are still facing destruction from distinct wildfire outbreaks.
