US President Donald Trump has praised Indian Flydubai captain Smit Machchhar as a “hero” following the reported cockpit attack aboard flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump said Machchhar was badly injured but managed to open the cockpit door and raise the alarm, allowing passengers and crew to intervene. Trump said he had discussed the incident with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and repeated an account he had received about the co-pilot, while noting that some details remained unverified. The flight was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where all passengers were brought to safety. Investigators are continuing to establish exactly what happened and the motive behind the attack.
